TRAINING ASSISTANCE FOR MINES
The Iowa Department of Education administers a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), which provides funds for training and services delivered to mine owners/operators/contractors in the State of Iowa. Iowa’s MSHA State Grant allows for reduced cost mine safety training at Iowa’s fifteen community colleges. (wording change)
A focus of the Iowa MSHA State Grant Program is to make training available to small mines – employing 5 or fewer workers. To do this, it is necessary to establish classes and grouping workers together who are taking the same training. A schedule of classes (enclosed) has been established by each community college. The enclosed schedule contains the course identification, description, and contact information. Registration for each worker is $49 for a one-day class. To register, simply phone the contact listed at the community college.
QUALITY TRAINING FOR WORKERS
Iowa’s MSHA State Grant Program classes are taught by certificated MSHA instructors who are approved to train under the state grant program. The training they deliver is:
· current with federal and state mining regulations, policies and procedure;
· topical to current trends in the causes of mining accidents and “near misses”; and
· applicable to the needs of the workers in Iowa’s mine operations. Click here for more information on Mine Safety training in Iowa.
